Winter School 2021

GECKO research and training resources are manifold. Here you find a basic overview over literature in the area of ART AI and energy consumption practices, as well as the training courses we provide to our fellow Geckos.

1st Winter School (Dec21)

GECKOS first winter school was hosted by Strathclyde University. Due to the Corona pandemic, we had to switch to a fully virtual school. In five intensive days spread from Dec 2 to Dec 14, we focused on essential research-specific training and personal development of our ESRs. For example, we introduced into general issues such as research integrity, open science, gender equality, and data management. We also had sessions about specific methods and tools such as surveys and Living Labs as a research infrastructure. Another focus was put on networking and collaboration with industry partners, e.g., planning secondments. Find the full course list below!

Welcoming and Kickoff: Welcoming all participants and outlining the plan for the next days of our winterschool, as well as tackle any remaining organizational questions.

Three Minute Thesis: All ESRs prepared an individual Three Minute Thesis pitch of their planned PhD. In this session they are challenged to communicate the key element of their motivation, research question, methods, expected findings and use of their outcomes in a highly condensed manner.

Training Seminar on Product Development Process: In his invited talk “From concept to a viable innovative solution”, Dr. Navin Chatlani shared his experience about product development in interantional tech companies.

Introduction to cross-national online questionnaire surveys as a methodology

Introduction to living labs as a methodology

Gender dimension in research, including diversity analysis

PhD research plan Development: To identify common themes, goals and data requirements in small rotating groups, and potential secondment plan.

Industrial Panel: The Industrial panel comprised of partner pitches and following discussions with industry. Additionally, we outlined communication strategies with non-academic stakeholders to generate impact.

Planning Secondments: Pairing secondment hosts and ESRs in breakout rooms or in smaller group breakout rooms discussions.

Introductory course on research integrity: Guest talk by experienced lecturer and Head of House for Young Talents at University of Siegen, Dr. Müller.

Open Science in multi-disciplinary research

Data management plan: findable, accessible, interoperable & re-usable (FAIR) data.

Planning for collaborative work: Defining first collaborative mini-projects building on identified themes. In a next step, we initiate survey and living lab design with interested ESRs as well as other mini-projects & first joint publications.

Research plan Development per work packages: Discussion on ESRs detailed research plan, objectives, personal career development plan, time management plan, risk mitigation plan, progress monitoring procedure, validation by work packages 1-3.

Consolidated research plan: Overarching plan for each WP, including integration of WP ESR projects, interactions with other WPs and ESRs.

Wrap-Up and Outlook
